Date: 3 & 4 September, 2019

This workshop brings together Mistra Geopolitics researchers, international partners and Swedish key stakeholders to discuss ongoing research and activities related to sustainable oceans, and identify future research avenues. It is a key deliverable within Mistra Geopolitics’ Strategic Reserve project on Sustainable Oceans.

The first day of the workshop included presentations and discussions on the state of the art of research on geopolitics of sustainable oceans. Moreover, Priyatma Singh from University of Fiji presented research and governance perspectives from Fiji, and Helen Ågren, Swedish Oceans ambassador, and Peter Funegård, Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, shared their views on key priorities and future research needs.

The second day focuses on presentations on Deep Sea Mining (Anders Hansson and Axel Hallgren, LiU), The Geopolitics of a Changing Arctic (Ekaterina Klimenko, SIPRI) and Regional Fisheries Management (Ece Kural, Stockholm University). In addition, Franco Vaccarino from Massey University, New Zealand, presents insights into perspectives from the Pacific Island States.
