Water shortages in the Middle East are expected to drastically intensify. Since not all countries in the region can equally address the coming scarcity, this may aggravate existing regional asymmetries and further contribute to conflicts.  This is especially the case for Israel and Palestine—countries which have struggled for decades over the allocation and access to water.

This SIPRI event, organised with support from Mistra Geopolitics, aims to conceptualise regional water conflicts, review the fundamentals of water disagreements between Israel and Palestine and to identify ways forward.

Prof. Itay Fishhendler, Head of the Environmental and Planning Program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Prof. Itay Fischhendler is a leading scholar on transboundary water institutions and

Middle East water issues. His research focuses on environmental conflict resolution,

natural resources management and governance and decision-making under conditions

of political and environmental uncertainty.
