Mistra Geopolitics Director Björn-Ola Linnér will present impacts from climate change on small-island states and share reflections from an international workshop on loss- and damage at the Swedish democracy week.
The Swedish political week held in Visby, Gotland, (Almedalsveckan) is a democracy week centred around the most important issues in Swedish politics. Mistra Geopolitics Director Björn-Ola Linnér will contribute to the session The forgotten opportunities of climate change action.
The pace of action needs to increase
Emissions from domestic transport must be reduced by 70 percent by the year 2030, which requires action by local, national and global decision-makers. The pace of change needs to increase in order to mitigate climate change effects, especially for small island nations that are urgently threatened. Socially important functions must operate without disruptions even during extreme weather events.
Now, we have a unique opportunity to create the society of the future for future generations. To succeed, knowledge of global perspectives, new technology, social planning and people’s behavior is needed. The forgotten opportunities of climate change include smarter travel in work, sports and outdoor life and tough political decisions. In this session, four of Mistra’s research programmes propose solutions.
