Mistra Geopolitics researcher Karina Barquet will participate in the seminar focused on achieving sustainability for our oceans, and what kind of research, regulations, investments and processes are needed, at the Swedish political week (Almedalsveckan).
Balancing growth with the need to preserve our oceans
A holistic approach that takes into account not only economic growth but also social and ecological sustainability is a prerequisite for a sustainable blue economy.
The discussion will focus on how coexistence in the blue economy can help achieving sustainability in our oceans, and what kind of research, regulations, investments and processes are needed.
It will become increasingly important that multiple industries can co-exist in the same area to ensure that expansion in energy, food production, and shipping is done in a sustainable way so that we can simultaneously have healthy marine ecosystems and vibrant coastal communities. Achieving this requires a national approach that links to international agendas, with clear mandates and responsibilities. At the same time, a long-term strategic direction is needed that increases confidence among Swedish actors to dare to invest at home.
The seminar is based on two recently published reports “Towards a sustainable blue economy in Sweden” and “Coexistence between offshore wind power, commercial fishing, aquaculture and nature conservation”.
