Mistra Geopolitics Co-Director Henrik Carlsen will participate in the Swedish political week, discussing how to reduce dependency on fossil fuels in Sweden, and the geopolitical challenges of this transition with a specific focus on Russia.

The Swedish political week held in Visby, Gotland, (Almedalsveckan) is a democracy week centred around the most important issues in Swedish politics. Mistra Geopolitics Co-Director Henrik Carlsen will contribute with his expertise in the session Climate, security and resources – how to handle several crises at the same time?

Rysslands invasion av Ukraina har förändrat det geopolitiska läget och den globala spelplanen. Vårt beroende av fossila insatsvaror och råvaror är tydligt och det multilaterala samarbetet kring frågor som rör klimat och miljö påverkas.

Ryssland är en central aktör inom fossilsamhällets geopolitik genom sin export av olja och naturgas. Det finns också en uttalad strategi från Kreml att utnyttja klimatförändringarna för att ytterligare stärka sin nyckelroll i global livsmedelsförsörjning, särskilt vad gäller vete och konstgödsel. Medan Rysslands invasion av Ukraina påskyndar EU:s omställning från fossila bränslen, finns en risk att länder som Kina och Indien ökar sin import när priset på den ryska oljan och gasen sjunker.

Hur ska vi öka svensk fossilfri elproduktion, minska vårt beroende av gas och olja och samtidigt minska klimatutsläppen? Hur ska elektrifieringen av Sverige gå till och hur påverkar de geopolitiska utmaningarna de stora reserverna av fossila bränslen? Hur ska det internationella miljö- och klimatarbetet hållas levande och vad händer när vi stänger Ryssland ute ur multilaterala samarbeten?

Henrik Carlsen is a Senior Research Fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and Programme Director of Mistra Geopolitics. Currently Dr. Henrik Carlsen is leading the Mistra Geopolitics research theme Foresight Capabilities and Emerging Technologies. He is an expert on decision making under uncertainty, with an emphasis on climate change adaptation. His research interests are based on the intersection between science and policy on long-term challenges to society.
