Notions of climate change and security in humanitarian international non-governmental organizations

Summary

In this conference paper, Richard Söder at Stockholm University explores the effects of climate change on our societies and states. The role of international humanitarian non-governmental organizations in the early response to some of the most catastrophic effects of climate change on nature, humans, societies and states are examined.

This paper was presented at the 2023 Radboud Conference on Earth System Governance held 24-26 October 2023 in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Conclusion

The article finds that the examined organizations acknowledge climate change as a critical issue, but they focus on different aspects of it. Notably, their conceptualizations of climate change and related risks are based on diverse security logics and carry significant implications for their humanitarian notions and practices more generally.
